Sustainable Cities & Communities

Our Approach

In response to the growing need to create healthy and sustainable cities, Earthwatch has developed a series of programs to create more resilient urban environments. Working alongside scientists, local municipalities, and partner organizations, Earthwatch engages community members to collect essential environmental data related to green infrastructure, urban forests, water quality, temperature, and air quality, answering relevant research questions that can influence positive change. By engaging with communities, Earthwatch ensures that participants gain increased awareness and knowledge about additional ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change at a local level, creating a new cohort of environmental ambassadors. Earthwatch’s priorities align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—specifically, targets and indicators within SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Everyone has a personal connection to trees. We’ve found that people want to become involved in greening their neighborhoods. Our programs are designed to help municipalities and organizations choose to plant the right trees in the right places with the right community support to help cities become more resilient and healthy in the face of global change.

YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Earthwatch depends on donations—above and beyond what we raise from volunteers who participate in our expeditions—to deliver our global conservation mission. In fact, volunteer contributions provide only half of the total resources Earthwatch needs to sustain over 20 global field research expeditions, a wide variety of educational programs, corporate sustainability trainings, and more each year.
